Have I told you lately how much I love my air fryer?  Ok yes I have BUT I will say it again.  It is by far my most favourite kitchen appliance. I use my air fryer at least once a day, and one of my favourite things to make is sweet & salty kale chips.  Just 4 ingredients and 10 minutes is all you need to make these crispy kale chips. Cooking kale chips in the air fryer is the easiest and foolproof way to get the crispest chips every time.  Plus there’s no weird ingredients that store bought kale chips can contain - ain’t nobody got time for that!

WHAT IS AN AIR FRYER?

An air fryer is a kitchen appliance that uses convection to rapidly circulate hot air around food to cook and crisp it up.  It’s essentially a mini convection oven that fits perfectly on your countertop.

ARE KALE CHIPS HEALTHY

We all know kale is good for us.  It’s been touted as the king of super greens for years and is a good source of protein, fibre and Vitamins B, C, A and K. Making kale into chips still allows you to get all those good qualities, and when made with minimal healthy ingredients, they’re definitely a treat you can feel good about. I think the best way to look at kale chips is that they are a healthier alternative than a packet of potato chips.  Making your own kale chips is also healthier than store bought, which can be laden with strange ingredients and unnecessary sugars.

INGREDIENTS

These kale chips are made with just a handful of healthy, everyday ingredients.  Here’s what you’ll need (full measurements listed in the printable recipe card below)…

HOW TO MAKE SWEET & SALTY KALE CHIPS

Wash kale thoroughly and dry.  If you have a salad spinner it makes this part really easy!  Rip the kale leaves away from the stems, and further rip the leaves into whatever size chip your heart desires. Place the kale leaves in a bowl along with the olive oil and massage the oil into the kale, making sure every piece is thoroughly covered.  Next, add in the maple syrup and repeat.  Season with a little salt. Pour the kale leaves into the preheated air fryer basket.  Slide the basket into the air fryer and cook at 180C / 350F for 2-3 minutes, giving the basket a good shake after every minute.  The kale is done when it is crispy and slightly golden brown.  Pay careful attention during the cooking process as it can burn easily. Remove the chips from the air fryer basket and enjoy immediately.

HOW DO YOU KEEP KALE CHIPS CRISPY?

I’ve found that kale chips are never quite as crispy as straight after you make them, so I’d encourage you just to make small batches immediately when you want them rather than making a huge batch to portion out over time. If you really want to make them ahead of time, be sure to store them in an airtight container at room temperature.

TOP TIPS

Be sure to remove the large stems from the kale leaves before cooking.  You can save these to use in stocks and broths.Break up your kale leaves to whatever size you like - I like smaller chips but they can also be larger palm sized pieces if you wish.Keep a close eye on the chips while they are cooking and shake the basket regularly - these chips can burn easily. For the most crispiest kale chips, eat immediately!I’ve made this recipe purposely as a small batch as I believe kale chips are best eaten immediately after cooking.  The serve will be good for 1-2, but you can easily double or triple the recipe to feed more.
