Golden Syrup Dumplings are a classic Australian dessert. If you haven’t been lucky enough to try it before here’s what you’re looking at - balls of dough baked in a thick and bubbly syrup sauce until they transform into sweet dumplings with caramelised edges. It’s best served hot out of the oven with some vanilla ice cream or cream on top.
My sister has been making this recipe for as long as I can remember and it’s always a hit. She very generously shared her recipe with me so I could share it here and I’m so happy she did. Having never made it myself until recently, I discovered just how easy it is to throw together and it’s become my default dessert when I need to rustle up something fast.
I know your family will love it as much as ours - enjoy!

Golden syrup dumplings are so easy to make at home and you only need a few simple ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need (measurements are listed in the full recipe at the bottom of this page)…

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 180C / 350F. Sift flour into a large mixing bowl.  Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. In a separate bowl, beat egg & milk together then stir into the flour mixture until just combined. Roll the dough into tablespoon-sized balls & place them into an oven proof dish. Place all syrup ingredients into a saucepan & bring to boil. Pour the syrup on top of the dumplings & bake for 15 minutes or until the dumplings are puffed & cooked through. Serve with ice cream or cream.
