Guacamole may cost extra at your local Mexican restaurant but it’s totally cheap and easy to make at home.  Whether you’re making a delicious Mexican feast for guests or just need a quick afternoon snack, this 5-minute healthy guacamole recipe right here is all you’ll ever need. Homemade guacamole is perfect as a stand-alone dip served with corn chips, or slathered on top of nachos, tacos or fajitas.  You could also serve it on top of a burrito bowl for extra flavour. But my all-time favourite way to serve it is on top of some cucumber bites!  Simple, healthy and irresistible. The hardest part about this guacamole may just be deciding what to serve it with.  There are just so many scrumptious options!

CAN GUACAMOLE BE HEALTHY?

Absolutely!  Guacamole is full of healthy ingredients that you can feel good about enjoying.  Back in the 90’s when we banished fat from foods we may have been scared off from guac entirely given it’s high in fat. But rest assured it’s high in good fats aka healthy monounsaturated fats.  It’s a perfectly healthy snack!

HOW TO PICK THE PERFECT RIPE AVOCADO

To make the best guacamole you’re going to need to use a ripe avocado.  There’s a whole lot of resources out there that claim to have the best trick to picking ripe avocados but I’ve found nothing works better than a simple touch test. Ripe avocados feel slightly soft but not too mushy when you apply gentle pressure to the top (where the small stem is).

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

You only need a few simple ingredients to make a truly delicious homemade guacamole.  Here’s what you’ll need (full measurements are listed in the printable recipe card below)…

Avocado Extra Virgin Olive Oil Fresh Lemon Juice Red Onion Cilantro / Coriander Salt & Pepper 

OPTIONAL GUACAMOLE MIX-INS

To make a chunkier and spicier guacamole, simply add in some diced tomato and jalapeno.

HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY GUACAMOLE – STEP BY STEP

When I told you this guac is super easy to make I was not joking around.  All you need to do is…

Slice the avocado in half, remove the seed and scoop out the flesh into a bowl.  Mash well with a fork. Add the rest of the ingredients (olive oil, lemon, coriander / cilantro, red onion, salt & pepper) and mix well. Add in any of the optional ingredients (if using) and mix well. Serve immediately.

HOW TO USE YOUR GUACAMOLE

Guac goes well on so many things but here’s just a few ways you can use yours…

As a dip with corn chips or homemade baked pita chips Make these cucumber bites On top of nachos On Fajita’s and Tacos In a Burrito Bowl Spread on rice cakes On wraps or sandwiches On top of chicken breast

STORING GUACAMOLE

Guacamole is really best served fresh.  You can make ahead an hour or two before you are ready to use and keep it in the fridge but I really wouldn’t encourage you to store it for any longer. Given that this is a 5 minute recipe, it’s super easy to make it fresh every time before use.  If you don’t think you’ll use it all in one go, halve the recipe.

Pick ripe avocados - you want avocados that feel slightly soft but not mushy. Salt generously - avocado and salt are the perfect match. Don’t be stingy here. Serve immediately - I know there’s plenty of articles out there that say you can cover it in plastic wrap, water or extra lemon juice to keep it from browning but the very best way to enjoy it is to serve it fresh! This recipe would be shared happily between 2 people. You can double, triple etc this recipe to feed a crowd, or halve it if you’re just wanting a quick snack for yourself.
